Emo is a type of characterized by melodic musicianship, with expressive and confessional lyrics. It originated in mid 80's as hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C. to describe "emotional hardcore" bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. However, in early 90's, these bands broke up and the emo belt was passed over to slightly less hardcore, and more bands like Texas is the Reason, Jawbreaker, Christie Front Drive, and Sunny Day Real Estate. The sound of 90's emo was a bit different from the 80's emo with softer and less rooted in hardcore.
