Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark Might Scare Off The Help

It’s the thing you don’t see that’s always the scariest part of a horror movie. And it’s those places you can’t see as a kid underneath the bed, inside the closet, up in the attic where the horrible child-eating monsters are always waiting to get you.

Put those things together, and you’ve got “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” a goosebumps-y haunted-house flick where the floorboards and the mattresses and the big old furnace in the basement really are hiding something deadly.

A remake of a fairly-effective TV movie from 1973 the monsters were cheap, but the suspense was smartly ratcheted the new “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” was directed by first-timer Troy Nixey, although you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a new movie from Guillermo del Toro, whose name gets the most prominent placement on the posters and in the advertising.

Even if del Toro didn’t yell “Action!” and “Cut!” the movie bears his imprint, from his fascination with scary stories told from a child’s point-of-view (“The Devil’s Backbone”) to the elegantly grotesque creatures (which bear more than a resemblance to the creepy-crawlies from “Pan’s Labyrinth”).

The child in question this time around is Sally (Bailee Madison), an unhappy young girl being shuttled from her unstable mother to go and live with her father Alex (Guy Pearce), who’s in the process of restoring a gorgeous old mansion with the help of his girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes).

Kim does her best to get close to Sally, particularly since the work-obsessed Alex doesn’t pay much attention to her, but Sally resists. And while exploring one day, Sally finds a sealed-off room that Alex opens up over the warnings of Harris (Jack Thompson), the house’s longtime caretaker.

Salman to make quick dash to the US for treatment!

You have seen B-Town hunk Salman Khan bashing up goons to pulp, but this time around, it’s our very own Bollywood superstar, who is battling ill health.

Apparently, the actor is down and out due to the brute pain in his jaw for the past three months, which his giving him nightmares.

It is believed that the ‘Dabangg’ star will fly out to the USA on 27th August, for a second opinion and further treatment.

Talking to a daily, a source said, “Salman had this problem about seven years back. He used to get spasms in his face. But the pain would go away. In fact, it vanished completely after a year or two. It suddenly came back about three months back. This time, it`s more painful. He couldn`t have neglected it further.”

Explaining about Salman’s deteriorating health, the source revealed, “Salman is in extreme pain. Every time he eats something extremely hot or cold, the pain intensifies. His jaw region hurts a lot.”

Last week, Salman was rushed to Lilavati hospital in Bandra. “His pain was too acute. Salman, who is normally a very tough guy, was almost screaming. The doctors at Lilavati suggested that he visits Saifee hospital in Charni Road. At Saifee, he was advised to undergo angiography,” said the source.

Salman is suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, something his brother Sohail confirmed and said, “Trigeminal neuralgia bahut bada shabd hai. I don`t know what you`re saying. It`s my brother`s health. All I can say is that yes, he is going to the US on August 27 for a second opinion, diagnosis and treatment for his nerve problem.”

With ‘Bodyguard’ releasing this Eid, it will be the first time when Salman will be unavailable for the release of his film as well as Eid and Ganapati celebrations at his home.

Kareena recommends Imran for Shahid’s role?

Kareena Kapoor is very impressed with her ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’ co-star, actor Imran Khan. Not just have the two become super friendly on the sets of Karan Johar’s film, but sources state that Kareena is also recommending Imran for other films.

According to grapevine, Bebo has recommended Imran’s name to director Milan Luthria for the sequel of ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai’. The role was initially offered to Kareena’s ex- Shahid Kapoor. While Shahid is yet to say yes to the role, producer Ekta Kapoor is seriously considering Kareena’s suggestion.

The film is based on Mumbai’s underworld, and Imran is being considered for Chhota Rajan’s role.

The film already has Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor as part of the star cast. Hunt for the second lead is on. Interestingly, Akshay Kumar, plays the role of a don, inspired by Dawood Ibrahim.

Speaking to a daily, a source revealed, “Kareena feels that Imran would bring novelty to the character inspired by Rajan. More so because he has played strong romantic roles in most of his films.”

Besides Kareena shares a great rapport with Imran whom she first met on the sets of ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’.

“That’s also one reason why she`s so strongly recommending Imran`s for this movie,” added the source.

Apparently producer Ekta Kapoor is also backing Kareena`s suggestion to director Milan Luthria.

Obama talks finance with new IMF chief Lagarde

US President Barack Obama discussed global finance with IMF chief Christine Lagarde on Friday in their first conversation since she was appointed head of the world lender.

“The president congratulated Madame Lagarde on her new role and reinforced the importance of close cooperation between the United States and the IMF,” the White House said in a statement describing the phone call.

“The president and the (IMF) managing director agreed on the need for policies that foster growth and job creation in the near term, while securing medium-term fiscal consolidation,” it said.

“They also concurred on the importance of rebalancing global demand towards emerging markets.”

Obama had earlier cut short his summer vacation in Massachusetts to keep an eye on Hurricane Irene, a Category Two storm set to shear the US east coast over the weekend.

Lagarde took over as head of the International Monetary Fund in July after her predecessor, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, resigned in May to battle sexual assault charges in New York, of which he was cleared earlier this week.

Eurozone crisis over in two to three years: EFSF chief

The head of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), Klaus Regling, believes the eurozone will overcome its current debt crisis by 2014.

“One can justifiably expect the crisis to be over within two to three years,” he told the magazine Spiegel out Sunday.

“In all eurozone countries the fundamentals are improving,” he said.

All eurozone countries have started putting their finances in order and already some of those worst affected by the crisis, such as Ireland, are back on their feet, he said.

The EFSF was set up last year to help shore up debt-ridden countries.

Its role is shortly to be expanded in line with measures agreed to by eurozone leaders in July.

The German head of the EFSF believes the eurozone’s financial situation is better than that of the United States.

Ban seeks urgent deployment of UN mission to help Libya

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday summoned major regional organizations to join the United Nations in helping the new Libyan authorities deliver immediate emergency aid and provide a democratic transition after the ouster of Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi’s regime.

He said the Security Council, which makes the decisions on such matters, had assured him of their support for the rapid deployment of a UN mission in Libya, adding that its decision on Thursday to release to the authorities Transitional National Council (TNC) $1.5 billion in Qaddafi regime assets that it had frozen under sanctions a welcome step.

“At this moment of great transition, we must come together with an effective, well-coordinated programme of international action,” he told the heads of the African Union (AU), Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union in a video conference from UN Headquarters in New York.

“All of us now must work together and respond rapidly to requests from the Libyan transitional authorities for assistance.” He noted that his Special Adviser for Post-Conflict Planning Ian Martin and his Special Envoy for Libya Abdel-Elah Al-Khatib met with National Transitional Council (NTC) leaders in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday to discuss needs after the deadly fighting in which Qadhafi’s opponents have taken control of much of the country, including most of Tripoli, the capital.

“As do other international leaders we have consulted in recent days, they expect the United Nations to play an essential, pivotal role in the country’s future,” he said. In addition to immediate humanitarian assistance, particularly as it relates to medical help, they placed special emphasis on early support for elections, transitional justice and policing, as well as longer-term assistance in socio-economic recovery, rule of law and institution-building.

While there is growing recognition that the crisis in Libya has entered a final and decisive phase, enormous challenges remain to be met as fighting continues in many parts of the country, including Tripoli, Sirte and Sabha.

“Lives continue to be lost. The destruction of property and livelihoods has been tragically heavy,” he said. There are widespread shortages of fuel, food and medical supplies, particularly in the Nafusa Mountains and Tripoli. Reports on the ground suggest that the water supply to the capital and surrounding region may be in danger, putting approximately three million people, or more, at risk

India parliament edges toward corruption resolution

India’s parliament edged closer to an agreement on Saturday on an anti-corruption bill that could end a 12-day hunger strike by a social activist that has lead to widespread anger against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s besieged government.

The campaign to get the legislation passed by 74-year-old Anna Hazare has struck a chord with millions of Indians tired of endemic corruption, sparking nationwide protests and exposing the ruling Congress party as out-of-touch with voters.

Lawmakers from the ruling Congress party and the main opposition agreed in principle to Hazare’s three key demands for the bill during a fractious special session of parliament, but cautioned that the legislation would take time to be resolved.

Hazare has demanded that the bill includes bringing civil servants under a proposed corruption agency’s authority, ensures similar agencies at a state level and creates a citizen’s charter. The government has asked for a promise from Hazare that he will end his fast should they meet his demands.

Flooding in Manhattan streets as Irene arrives

Seawater surged into the streets of Manhattan on Sunday as Tropical Storm Irene slammed into New York, downgraded from a hurricane but still unleashing furious wind and rain. The flooding threatened Wall Street and the heart of the global financial network.

Salty water from New York Harbor submerged parts of a promenade at the base of the island. A foot of water rushed over the wall of a marina in front of the New York Mercantile Exchange, where gold and oil are traded.

“You could see newspaper stands floating down the street,” said Scott Baxter, a hotel doorman in the SoHo neighborhood.

As the center of the storm passed over Central Park at midmorning, floodwater reached the wheel wells of some stranded cars in Manhattan, and more streamed into the streets of Queens.

Still, the storm was far from the worst fears. The Sept. 11 museum, a centerpiece of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, said on Twitter that none of its memorial trees were lost.

Irene weakened to winds of 65 mph, below the 74 mph dividing line between a hurricane and tropical storm. The system was still massive and powerful, forming a figure six that covered the Northeast. It was moving twice as fast as the day before.

As a hurricane, Irene had already killed 11 people and left 4 million homes and businesses without power. It unloaded more than a foot of water on North Carolina and spun off tornadoes in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware.

Even after the storm passes in the Northeast, the danger will persist. Rivers could crest after the skies the clear, and the ground in most of the region is saturated from a summer of persistent rain.

Temples in India

The cultural hues of India have never failed to allure people across the world. One of the factors that influence the Indian culture is religion. With India being a melting pot of several religions, the country has a rich treasure of religious monuments. However, India is mainly known for its exquisite Hindu temples, which have never failed to enthrall the tourists.

Temple Glory

The Hindus worship several gods and goddesses with each one being associated with an attribute. To give a few examples, the Hindus consider the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in great reverence. It is a belief that Brahma is the God of Creation, Vishnu is regarded as the Preserver while Shiva is worshipped as the Destroyer. Apart from the trinity, the Hindus also worship Ganesha, the Elephant God, extensively and believe that before starting any new venture, it is important to seek the blessings of Ganesha. Apart from these, there are other numerous deities that are worshipped with great veneration. Hence, with so many gods and goddesses, the number of temples too is high with different temples being dedicated to different deities. The beauty of the temples in India is that they are built with unique architectural style and carvings. The temples usually consist of a huge hall, which leads to a sanctum where the actual idol of the gods or goddesses is placed. The Hindu temples also consist of a pinnacle, which is made of gold or silver and can be seen even from a far distance.

There are a large number of temples in India, which have attained great following and admiration for their architectural styles. One of the most prominent temples in India is the Balaji temple situated in Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh. This temple is a shrine that worships Vishnu and Balaji is considered a form of Vishnu. The God of Destruction, Shiva, also has numerous temples spread across the country. Chidambaram, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Somnath and Tryambakeshwar are one of the prominent Shiva shrines among the temples in India. Ganesha is also worshipped in every corner of the country and has innumerable temples in the towns and cities of India. Some of the prominent Ganesha temples include the Siddhi Vinayak temple and the Ashtavinayak shrines. The Ashtavinayak include eight temples of Ganesha that are located around Pune in Maharashtra.
