The Two Scariest Horror Movie Costumes

When it comes time to dress up for Halloween, there's always the choice to make: do you go silly or scary? Many love causing trick-or-treaters or their friends to jump so they opt for the latter. Choosing a costume of one of the scariest horror movie characters is a sure way to get screams and shrieks as you celebrate Halloween.

One of the scariest horror movie costumes is Jason Voorhees from the "Friday the 13th" movies. The first film brought Jason to life on the screen in the early 80's and viewers have continued to be terrified up through the recent reboot of the movie. What makes Jason so scary is his silent slasher nature and his horrific face shielded by that hockey mask. A Jason costume on Halloween will scare many people who come across his path.

Along with Jason, the other scary horror movie icon is Freddy Krueger. A Freddy Krueger costume consists of his gruesome burnt up face, striped long sleeve top and his brown hat. Freddy is famous for the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series of movies including a remake as well. In those movies, teenagers are afraid to go to sleep because Freddy will turn their dreams to deadly nightmares.

Freddy has gone through plenty of films including a face-off against Jason Voorhees. There wasn't a clear winner in their battle and there likely never will be. As far as scaring the costume competition one thing is clear though. Choosing either the Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees classic horror movie costumes is a great way to celebrate their iconic status and scare the living daylights out of others!

A List of 26 of the Scariest Movies Ever Made

It takes a lot these days for a horror movie to scare me, which is so surprising to me because horror movies used to scare the crap out of me when I was younger. I don't know why I loved horror movies SO much when I was a child, because I had a really hard time sleeping in the dark after the scary movies were over.

Every weekend my two best friends and I would rent one of the Halloweens or Friday the 13th movies, pop some popcorn, turn off the lights, cuddle under a blanket and turn it on. My spot was always in the middle of the girls and everyone HAD to stay awake so I was sure not to be watching such a scary movie alone. Then afterwards, I would be scared for days from these movies that I subjected myself to.

However, lately, I find it really hard to find a movie that has been able to actually scare me. I guess since I have grown up and matured I have realized that the things I was most scared of in these movies is much less likely to happen to me in real life. Just enjoy the scare and then move on. I guess it is the movies that are about true events that really give me a chill. Due to the fact that there aren't very many scary movies out there today that are truly scary, I have decided to provide you with a list of the movies that I think are the scariest ones on the market. These are movies that really and truly scare the crap out of me:

1. The First Friday the Thirteenth (this is the only one that was really and truly frightening).

2. The Exorcist (an oldie but a goodie, my boyfriend won't even watch this one because it scarred him so horribly as a child)

3. House of 1000's Corpses

4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (The Old One)

5. All of the SAW movies.

6. Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (TERRIFYING!).

7. The Candyman Movies.

8. The Amityville Horror (the new one).

9. Alien (I know, not really a "horror" movie, but REALLY SCARY!)

10. The New Halloween Movie by Rob Zombie

11. Hostel (this movie scared the crap out of me, don't watch it before any trip abroad! Just a warning).

12. Arachnophobia (Spiders taking over, yeah that's scary!)

13. Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows (Blaire Witch Project 1 has got nothing on this movie!)

14. Mimic

15. The Shining

16. Thirteen Ghosts

17. Pet Cemetery

18. The Fly (Just Sick and Wrong)

19. Seven

20. Silence of the Lambs

21. 28 Days Later

22. The Descent

23. The Skeleton Key

24. Turistas

25. Quarantine (this one is REALLY SCARY!)

26. Dawn of the Dead (Warning: VERY GORY)

Well, that's all the scary movies I can think of at the moment. But if you are looking for movies that will really scare the crap out of you here is a good list to get you started. This list is not in any kind of order of scariness, ALL of these films are for the most part equally scary. Just know that I have warned you that these movies are extremely scary so watch them with caution.

Hindi Movies and All About Its History

The Indian film industry has been making Hindi films since the 1930s and there has been a surge of popularity in some places for movies made here. Since there are different languages spoken all over India, some of the movies are in different languages. The Hindi movies have become the most popular in the last ten years, which led to the term "Bollywood." This term actually refers to the Indian film industry as a whole but the movies to which it is referring are Hindi.

If you are looking for a Hindi Movie, you will have many thousands to choose from. By looking into the year of the movies, you might be able to learn a little bit about them. Here is a simplified guide. If the movie was made during the years of:

  • 1940s - 1960s, it is from the Golden Age of Indian Cinema.
  • 1960s - 1970s, it is most likely going to be a romantic or action film.
  • 2000 - present, it is likely to be a musical or a melodrama.

You can use this guide to try and hone in on specific genres, or do a search online to try and find the right movie for you.

If you want to watch movies with specific Hindi songs or find a specific song from a movie, you can search for this as well. There are always trends involving certain actors or styles and songs in the media, so if you keep on top of the Indian news you will be able to find these trends and proceed accordingly. Watching a Hindi movie with many famous actors will probably mean that you will be able to find a copy of the soundtrack or recordings of the songs because people will be more interested in that movie.

If you are looking for a Hindi VHS or Hindi DVD, you will be in luck. Though VHS is less common these days due to a lack of video cassette recorders and the predominance of DVDs and Blu-Ray, there are always people who refuse to throw away their VHS tapes. You can find these and more online so that you can play them in the comfort of your own home or add to an existing collection. The same goes for Hindi DVDs, but they will be much more common and probably easier to find.

You can find Hindi movies online at many websites since they have become so popular. The important thing is to make sure you find one you really want to watch because just as in America, there are a wide variety of movies to choose from.

A Glance Into Hindi Films Of Today

All through these years, the Indian films has grown into four classifications, mainstream, parallel, Diaspora and regional. These sections are separated by a thin line and they tend to merge at times.

But, the general treatment decides its fate as a commercial or artistic venture. Upcoming Hindi films follow realistic and important subjects and portray taboo topics, even though commercial cinema is still hesitant to deal with these topics, because those subjects might not entertain the masses.

Bollywood stands as largest film industry in the world with regard to production, with more than thousand films every year in a single year. Sometimes the public assume that Bollywood and Indian movie industry are synonymous. This is incorrect as Indian parallel cinema is popular internationally. Several celebrated film festivals screen new Indian films which are usually well-received by an international film lovers. For example, Berlin film festival showed nine Indian films which was for the first time in Berlinale. The Man Beyond the Bridge, Road Movie and Peepli Live were some of the movies which received good responses from critics.

Even now Bollywood uses the technique of song and dance sequences in films but directors are experimenting with different topics which are connected more to reality. In Contrast parallel films and horror movies have already become capable of depicting ordinary lives. The experiment is visible in new Indian films such as Amir Khan's Peepli Live directed by Anusha Rizvi which deals with the suicides among poor farmers.

My Name is Khan starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, looked like a typical Hindi film but is a hit one which got a lot of appreciation internationally. This film was part of the official choice of Berlin film festival and the entry tickets of My Name is Khan were sold out within no time for 1000 Euros each.

Some critics think present Indian movie industry is just a shadow of its splendid past. At times this observation is true but success at box office of a film is dependent on the audience. Nevertheless as time goes by, many movies are changing to progressive even if in a small way unlike Hollywood movies which frequently deal with unusual topics.

Nowadays, Hollywood top directors and artists wants to appear in Bollywood movies. For example Hollywood director Danny Boyle had directed 'Slumdog Millionare' movie in Hindi and got Oscar award for that. For 'Paa' movie many make-up artists came down here to give Amitabh Bachchan a childish look suffering from an unusual disease. The calibre of Bollywood film industry is thus growing very well.

Bollywood Round Up - The Month That Was

With the month ending, it is the time to retrospect at the movies that hit the silver screen and their fate at the hands of the greatest critic - the box office. Here is a list of the Bollywood movies this month and how they fared at the ticket counter.

The first movie that launched this season was the Akshay Kumar starrer ribtickler Housefull - which released on the last day of the previous month. This movie seems to be the only one that can be considered to be a success this month. One of the common madcap comedies that can be seen in Bollywood, Housefull provided a lot of slapstick and situational comedy - just what the doctor ordered for Akshay Kumar's sagging career that was marred by some questionable decisions last year.

With Bollywood riding on the Housefull wave Yash Chopra's Badmaash Company, one of the few Indian con movies was released. The movie had an interesting premise and even had some good acting, but it wasn't what you would go to watch if you wanted an Oceans 11 or something.

The next release was Bumm Bumm Bole, which starred the child sensation Darsheel Safary with new comer Ziyah Vastani and Atul Kulkarni. This movie tried to create a balance between the life of the adults and the children, and tried to give the audience a taste of both. However, the movie suffered from an uninventive screenplay and prolonged sequences. Said to be filmed by Priyadarshan, one of the best directors in Bollywood, this movie left a lot to be desired.

The last movie, which was supposed to be the movie that put behind several movie releases and had them postponed was the big budget and much hyped Kites. With nothing new to offer to the international as well as national audience, this movie soon petered down into nothingness.

The Entertainment Quotient of Bollywood Movies

If there's one thing that guaranteed to raise your spirits after a long and difficult day, it is a Bollywood movie (with subtitles, if necessary). Bollywood is the name of India's film industry. More specifically, it churns out approximately 1000 movies annually in the Hindi language. The movies have glamour, color, joie de vivre, an endless line of beautiful, accomplished actors, amazing stunts (some aided and abetted by technology), slick editing, awesome photography and inspired direction. They showcase the essence of India - the zest for life, the indestructible spirit, the good, bad and ugly and acceptance of all that life and people are.

On the downside, the storylines sometime disappear into a maze of loose ends. The first time you see a Bollywood movie, you may consider it a bit over-the-top, the comedy a bit too loud in places and the theatrics overdone. But they grow on people, who are willing to give it more than a single try. The entertainment quotient is supplied by witty one-liners, comedy that is now moving out of the slapstick mold and a unique feature of Bollywood movies - the songs and dances incorporated into the story, which take the story further or emphasize a particular turn in it. Mostly, the foot-tapping music and well choreographed dances lift up one's spirits and energy levels.

While some movies disappear without a trace, an increasingly great number enjoy viewership that allows them to get a decent return and some break all records in terms of the income generated. A great part of this revenue is realized from overseas sales, from an increasing number of people, whose mother tongue is not Hindi. There are movies of every genre - action, comedy, family, romance, suspense and even horror. The problem then for those who would like to venture into the experience of watching Bollywood movies is to know which are the ones that are going to give them great entertainment value and which are the ones best avoided.

Horror Movie Cliches

Movie clichés are somewhat inevitable especially in an industry where ideas are endlessly recycled in the hope of raking in more cash. Perhaps the greatest offender is the horror genre. Most clichés can be traced back to an original film which featured an excellent scene that later film makers felt compelled to copy, for example we have Psycho to thank for endless shower scene murders. Let´s take a closer look at some classic horror movie clichés.

Goodies

The main culprit in this category is slasher films, they virtually always feature a cast of mostly unsympathetic teen fodder and generally include a range of characters who probably wouldn't hang out together in real life. There´s the angry dumb jock, the stoner, the cheerleader, the slut, the token minority guy, the fat guy or geek and of course the virginal heroine. Groups will always find a reason to split up so they can be picked off one by one and the bad guy in the group will usually redeem himself with an act of self-sacrifice. Funnily enough seeing your friends brutally butchered is often a big turn on for teens and they love to stop at inopportune moments for a quickie which inevitably gets them killed. Cops are always inept, they never believe the victims and they always turn up too late to help or just in time to get knifed in the back.

For supernatural horrors the set-up usually involves someone returning to their home town after an absence of years. This often ties in with the main guy and girl, usually a cop and a doctor, having had a previous relationship and they are now forced to work together, of course you know they will be in love again by the end of the film. Children, animals and old people can always sense an evil spirit but no one pays them any attention. If there´s a priest character then he will always have a crisis of faith.

In monster movies the hero is often a cop, reporter or scientist. If there´s a mad scientist or evil government character he will always want to capture the monster so he can study it or use it but his plan will always backfire and usually after he double crosses the rest of the group by locking them in somewhere he´ll immediately run into the monster and get eaten.

If the main character gets murdered early on in any type of horror expect a cut to them waking up from a nightmare.

Baddies

The killers have their own set of rules. In slasher films they can take ludicrous amounts of damage without showing pain, they often have a mother complex and they aren´t allowed to run. I´m always reminded of the old Pepe Le Pew cartoons where no matter how fast the cat runs away the skunk just skips along slowly and catches up with ease. Killers also seem to spend a large amount of time moving bodies around and displaying them to scare their remaining victims. Don´t stand under a tree or the inevitable drip of blood will draw your view upwards to the body perfectly poised to fall on top of you.

One of the most over used scenes features the killer or monster appearing to be dead and then returning to life unexpectedly. This is made all the more annoying by the fact that the hero or heroine will often shoot or batter the baddie and then as soon as the baddie goes down they drop their weapon and run instead of mashing it up.

Another common trick, especially in supernatural movies is the glimpse of the ghost, in a mirror, over the shoulder of the hero, running past in the background and of course being suddenly illuminated when someone turns their torch on. Ghosts who are trying to convey a message will always do it by terrifying the person they are trying to talk to.

Fake Scares

Fake scares are annoyingly predictable and irritating. For example why do cats in horror films hide in cupboards and jump on people who open them? Sound effects suddenly booming are a great way to get the audience to jump without actually having anything scary happen on screen. Sometimes the fake scare is used like the boy who cried wolf, so an annoying male character will scare a girl and then later when it´s the killer for real she´ll still think it´s the joker of the group.

It's Different - The Changing Face of Bollywood

in the mid 1990's if you heard anyone talk about a forthcoming movie release in Bollywood they would sound too much like a popular Indian Ketchup commercial. The buzzword was "it's different". Of course the movies ended up being the same old formula films that sometimes clicked and most times faded away into oblivion.

But now ten years later you don't hear that buzzword much, instead you get to see it. The film industry is finally making a conscious effort to try new things. In fact one can safely say that it is more becoming the norm rather than the exception. Be it clever Visual Effects or story lines that push the creative envelope Bollywood is getting there.

As audiences get exposed to more sophisticated plots and themes they expect something new that will challenge their intellect. Just running around trees will not do anymore. Of course not all films made today are different but many are. Topics such as pre-marital sex, live-in relationships are making it to mainstream cinema in India. Edgy films like Being Cyrus are now being released as commercial cinema. Another film that pushed the limits at its time of release was Deepa Mehta's Fire. Released in 1996 it was the first time people got to see same sex relationships set in Indian society. Theaters were burnt and much high drama and tension was caused outside cinemas across the country. Debates were held for and against the banning of the film. Either way the film achieved one main thing. It helped to open up people's minds. You could even say it cleared the way for future experimentation.

Today with so much information at the disposal of many people in India Bollywood seems to have a wider canvas to paint on. While formula or masala films as they are also know will probably always be made here, an almost parallel universe of "New Age" films seems to be forming. Never before seen together on screen couples is the latest fad to hit our extremely colorful world of celluloid. Aamir & Kajol, Kareena & Ajay Devgan, Hrithik & Aishwarya are all set to enthrall the audiences sometime in the not too distant future. One thing is for sure; in the coming months, fans of Bollywood in India and across the globe are going to go where Bollywood has never gone before.

Michael Jackson and Bollywood

Michael Jackson's death has left a huge dent in Bollywood. The legendary king of Pop and a performer par excellence inspired numerous actors and musicians the world over, including Bollywood. Be it his trademark fashion sense, his groovy dance steps and his attitude-all of them caught the frenzy of Bollywood.

* People like Mithun Chakraborty and Govinda were the 'desi Michael Jacksons' in the early part of their careers thanks to their dance themed films which had moves that were lifted from MJ's videos. Michael Jackson in a way, had contributed to the career graphs of many Bollywood actors who emulated his style and moves.

* Michael Jackson's visit to Mumbai,in the year 1996 was met with a super reception. None of the international performer in India have been able to replicate and whip up the frenzy which Michael Jackson had created.

* Michael Jackson inspired Bollywood comedian Johnny Lever to create numerous parodies on the musical genius. In fact, Johnny Lever's best act is a take off on 'they don't really care about us' from MJ's album-History

* The video 'Thriller' which has won numerous awards and is easily the best music video ever(without special effects, mind you) inspired quite a few horror scenes and horror sequences in films, both Bollywood and Hollywood. Thriller went on to become the biggest ever music album with records that cannot be surpassed.

* The song 'They Don't Really Care About Us" with its thumping beats and procession based video inspired numerous songs and videos in Indian films. For example, A.R.Rahman's music and the video of 'Maro Maro' from the movie Boys (Telegu film) is a tribute to 'They Don't Really Care About Us"

* The song 'In the Closet' which is easily the sexiest song of Michael Jackson featuring Naomi Campbell was copied in the form of 'Ding Dong Bole' for a Tushar movie 'kuch toh Hai'

* The song 'The Way You Make Me Feel' was an absolute 'tapori' song that has been replicated in numerous Bollywood and South Indians songs with the same moves.

* Hrithik Roshan was the last big Bollywood star who had last met Michael Jackson. He had met him in the US while shooting for Kites. However Hrithik though mesmerized by MJ's aura, could make out that the man was frail by ill-health

Indian Cinema and Experimentation - Latest Trends

The Millennium has witnessed several changes in trends as far as the new Hindi movies are concerned. Scripts are more mature and deal with all kinds of political and social issues. Cinematography involves advanced techniques and filmmakers benefit from new and improved equipment. Movie soundtracks have changed drastically as western influences seep in through ever crack and gap. Mainstream cinema relies on 'item songs/numbers' to bring in the audience even if it looks like a flop from the word go. But almost all movies are coming up with an item number, which is its USP.

One of the most significant changes is the heavy investment towards marketing and promoting films. Since the film industry is a huge business opportunity, it is quite common to find them smartly packaged. Take Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai. It signaled the beginning of a new era of feel good and youthful films with all the song, dance and drama that Bollywood is famous for but also with subtle sensibilities that made it stand apart. Directors do not back out from making big budget films with an ensemble of stars and superstars.

Indian cinema is not restricted to the latest Bollywood movies but to the film industry as a whole. Art or specialized movies are modified to fit on big screens. A genre of hard-hitting and tough themes such as the kind seen in City of Gold (based on the lives of Mumbai mill workers) have become increasingly common. Filmmakers experiment with different ideas and interpretations of reality. Since movies only depict real life and are not in fact its mirror image, a lot of room remains available for creatively portraying ordinary living. The audiences have also started liking art movies.

New Hindi movies (mainly the popular kind) have turned to shooting most of the films in foreign locations. Action films contain more death defying stunts and a slicker packaging. At one point in time, women were relegated as love interests and often shown clinging to the hero's arm. Movies like Fashion, The President is Coming have proved that the story will not sink if it doesn't have a male lead. Filmmakers are experimenting with horror genres with renewed gusto, moving away from the standard ghost stories. Latest Bollywood movies like Raaz, 13B and Phoonk have proved that horror movies can be a commercial success. More filmmakers have started experimenting with horror genre these days.

Public Domain Horror Movies - Now Available For Free

he recent remake of the cult classic 'Nightmare on Elm Street' brought back fond memories of back when the filmmakers used to depend on a strong storyline and awesome characters to create the spookiness in a movie. Of course, as it is evident with the movie industry, not all of them were half as successful as they would have wanted to be. However, one cannot deny the fact that the horror and slasher flicks of yore have a firm and special place in people's hearts.

The good news is that most of these movies are available in the open domain and you can watch them either directly online or download them -for free and legally. Three Common Plot Points in Bollywood Horror Movies

If you have heard about those cliched Bollywood action movies where the villain has killed the protagonist's parents and he/she is baying for revenge, you would not be too surprised to find out that even Bollywood horror movies have some statutory plot points around which a movie can be made. These plot points were generously used by the Ramsay Brothers, who literally held the torch in the '80s and the '90s to a dwindling horror film market. Here are the three common plots found in a Bollywood horror movie.

Youth in an Old Mansion:

Old mansions and farmhouses in Lonavla and other far flung places in India made a killing when they were hired for the shooting of a horror movie. The plot basically had a couple of college kids go out either for a picnic and be stranded in an old mansion, or actually plan a picnic in an old mansion which is supposed to be haunted - yes, there were those kind of movies.

A few risque scenes, a little song and dance, and then the killing spree would start, and the main characters would find out that the mansion was haunted by someone because of some kind of injustice meted out to them - it would normally be a poor girl who was killed off for some particular reason.

The movie would finally end when the spirit would either be exposed to sunlight or would be locked in some temple or church.

Reincarnation:

Reincarnation has been a plot point for many horror movies based in urban India, but is nevertheless a very integral part of the Bollywood horror industry as well as the Bollywood industry as a whole. Reincarnation movies have been made into out and out actioners, thrilling horror and even love stories. The plot would revolve around one, or sometimes even two people who were killed off in their previous birth by the evil people, and they would take a rebirth to avenge themselves - those were fun times.

The movie would finally end when the reincarnated person would take the revenge in lieu of their previous birth. There have been several superhit movies based on this concept.

The Possessed:

Exorcist is not the only movie that has played about with the concept of being possessed. There are several Bollywood horror movies which have revolved around a young child or a woman being possessed by an aatma (spirit) and how doctors and even seers and saints try to exorcise the demons from their body.

This concept was mainly used by film makers to debate about science and God, and there were many sequences where a priest and a doctor would argue hammer and tongs about who would be the right person to exorcise the ghost.

"The Graduation Party" The Movie About A Generation

"The Graduation Party" is a film by an award winning writer director, creator of the great 4 star documentary "The Last Game" which was called the best sports film every made by the LA Times. This time out he tackles the subject of endings, beginnings, the death of youth and the birth of adulthood. These may be heavy themes but as they collide during the last party after graduation, the group of friends defer such reality with sustained non-sobriety, until the dawn shines the enlightenment of a misspent youth now gone. The party becomes both metaphor, analogy, tableau and allegory- and the catalyst of memories reminisced accelerate the maturity of some, while others refuse to leave the womb of the dorm room, the artificial secular sanctuary of the campus university. Oh, and everyone gets high, everyone gets drunk and everyone gets laid. But there is free lunch or hard lemonade and in the end such hedonism brings a bill that all must pay...

With films like The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo's Fire... Not to mention the seminal cinematic coming of age masterpiece... The Graduate... Does the world really need a new coming of age film? In the deft hands of this filmmaker, we do, as this generation, as every generation, requires definition and a legacy for their future heirs to see... and since growing up and growing old are not related to wisdom or any sort of intergenerational story passed down and told to the eldest child in a futile attempt to tame the wild sowing of our immature oats, sometimes even creating a reversal and paradox where the parent Shepard is taken care by his and her flock, who once where helpless, cashless and clueless until that day in early to mid May when we experience the sudden shocking and abrupt graduation sensation we call... Growing Up.

Movie Review: Despicable Me

Despicable Me is a children's film by Universal Studios starring Steve Carrel as the main character of the story. It's great to see so many big stars in the movie, such as Steve Carrel, Miranda Cosgrove and Julie Andrews. In the movie, Gru (Steve Carrel) is one of the world's super villains. Lately he hasn't been successful at being "the world's biggest super villain". So, with the help of his "minions" and Dr. Nafario he plans to steal the moon by shrinking it with his ray gun. The minions look like thumbs wearing goggles and overalls. But when his rival, a super villain named Vector, steals it from him, he must adopt three orphan girls to get inside Vector's mansion. Although Gru is a super villain, you'll see he has a heart of gold. The movie is fast paced with a lot of laughs for the whole family.

The minions are hilarious as they talk gibberish and act toddler-like. The story is fun and creative, unlike anything else. It's entertaining as it utilizes action, adventure and humor. The movie is mainly a comedy. The mixture of Gru learning to take care of the orphan girls makes a great basis for hilarious scenes. For example, he doesn't know that little girls don't sleep on newspapers in the kitchen. Or the fact that they don't drink out of dog bowls.

Although some parts of the movie are bizarre, they do find a way to make them ridiculous. In one flashback scene of Gru's childhood, it shows him trying to sell his mom on a Macaroni spaceship model. But you're surprised when he shows her his second model that's as big as his house. In another scene Gru survives multiple rocket and missile hits from his enemy Vector. The minions are a bit bizarre too. But once you get to know them a little you'll find yourself liking these cute but funny looking creatures.

Despicable Me DVD was recently released as well as the Blue Ray edition. The movie isn't scary for smaller children, but there are intense action sequences and dramatic moments. Children under the age of five may be frightened at some scenes. Parents need to use their own judgment. The movie is rated PG. If you like animation you're in for a lot of smiles and laughs as you watch the film Despicable Me. Overall it is a great movie for the entire family.

Different Types of Comedy Movies

It is an undeniable fact that the first movies, which were silent movies, were all comedies. These movies had good happy endings and propagated the theme of good winning over the bad. They placed much emphasis on humor and as such they siphoned great interest among the young and the old alike. With the passage of time, the lighthearted comedies gave way to more important social and political satires.

These movies helped people to understand the prevailing conditions through humor and wit. For example, in the well-liked film, 'comedy of manners', much emphasis was based on the manners and mannerisms of the social class. It was highlighted by the witty and catchy dialogues. Swapping gender roles in some films like 'Tootsie' also created humor and was adored by the audience.

Spoof or parody deals in making fun of, or dealing in a humorous way the plots and themes of the earlier classic films. They treat the subject by employing a wide sense of sarcasm, mockery, etc about the scenes of the old popular films. It is sometimes found that the audiences enjoy these spoofs better than the original movie! Some of the glaring examples of these sorts of movies are 'Blazing saddles', 'Airplane', etc.

Black comedies are those movies that deals with subjects that are taboo and are not discussed openly in the society. It also includes subjects like war, death, murder, suicide, etc in a satirical way. Though, it is filled with witty dialogues and fun plots, they are able to make the audience realize their follies in the way they deal with some sensitive topics in the society. Some of the most popular black comedies are, 'War of the Roses', 'Keeping Mum', etc.
