Movie Review: Despicable Me

Despicable Me is a children's film by Universal Studios starring Steve Carrel as the main character of the story. It's great to see so many big stars in the movie, such as Steve Carrel, Miranda Cosgrove and Julie Andrews. In the movie, Gru (Steve Carrel) is one of the world's super villains. Lately he hasn't been successful at being "the world's biggest super villain". So, with the help of his "minions" and Dr. Nafario he plans to steal the moon by shrinking it with his ray gun. The minions look like thumbs wearing goggles and overalls. But when his rival, a super villain named Vector, steals it from him, he must adopt three orphan girls to get inside Vector's mansion. Although Gru is a super villain, you'll see he has a heart of gold. The movie is fast paced with a lot of laughs for the whole family.

The minions are hilarious as they talk gibberish and act toddler-like. The story is fun and creative, unlike anything else. It's entertaining as it utilizes action, adventure and humor. The movie is mainly a comedy. The mixture of Gru learning to take care of the orphan girls makes a great basis for hilarious scenes. For example, he doesn't know that little girls don't sleep on newspapers in the kitchen. Or the fact that they don't drink out of dog bowls.

Although some parts of the movie are bizarre, they do find a way to make them ridiculous. In one flashback scene of Gru's childhood, it shows him trying to sell his mom on a Macaroni spaceship model. But you're surprised when he shows her his second model that's as big as his house. In another scene Gru survives multiple rocket and missile hits from his enemy Vector. The minions are a bit bizarre too. But once you get to know them a little you'll find yourself liking these cute but funny looking creatures.

Despicable Me DVD was recently released as well as the Blue Ray edition. The movie isn't scary for smaller children, but there are intense action sequences and dramatic moments. Children under the age of five may be frightened at some scenes. Parents need to use their own judgment. The movie is rated PG. If you like animation you're in for a lot of smiles and laughs as you watch the film Despicable Me. Overall it is a great movie for the entire family.
