MANIC STREET PREACHERS - Some Kind Of Nothingness

Some Kind of Nothingness sees the Manic Street Preachers' James Dean Bradfield Bradfield and Echo & the Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch trading lines that build to a crescendo of strings and backing vocals for their rather fantastic second single from their tenth (also rather fantastic) album Postcards from a Young Man.

It is big commercial "classic" Manics on show here with a singalong vibe and good duetting with the Bunnyman, that even a massive cheesy backing choir can't even ruin. Popping up on Strictly Come Dancing to sell a few extra copies will hopefully see this troubling the top of the charts if there is any justice in this world.

LOTTE MULLAN - Can't Find The Words

Everybody knows that slow and acoustic songs are quite annoying and should be only played on Radio 2 by Steve Wright - unless they come from the fretboard of Laura Marling etc. However, introducing Lotte Mullan, who releases the fantastic song Can't Find The Words that can be filed in the 'Slow Songs That Aren't Sh*t' file next to Marling.

The result is a chillaxing piece of blissful modern folk-pop with a good dose of great bass and drums that you'll want to listen to again to warm up your soul on these cold wintery days. It is kinda like Portishead have made a folk single, which can't be bad can it? This release has (apparently) now been put back to the 27th, but it is still definitely worth a listen now!

Rated 4 out of 5

PATRICK WOLF - Time Of My Life

Patrick Wolf, the musician and hair dye maverick, utilises a wide variety of instruments in his music and has created a genre known a 'folktronica' - which is a clever mixture of the words 'folk' and 'electronica' created by some brilliant wordsmith somewhere.

This limited edition 7" single is the first taster of his eagerly awaited new album. The result? It's fantastic! It is folky and with a classical and electronic sound that Ellie Goulding is probably trying to find. Buying this won't cause you to have the best time of your life, but it certainly won't harm your chances. However, it is rubbish that people can only buy it on vinyl (no CD or download) though. Don't you know that only anal morons buy singles on vinyl nowadays?

Rated 4 out of 5

WILLOW SMITH - Whip My Hair

If you don't already know, then Willow Smith is the daughter of the actual Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. According to information that we have received, the Fresh Prince is a man that wears black when fighting aliens and also hangs around with bad boys. Blimey!

Err...this is Will Smith's young daughter Willow Smith. Despite the obvious reservations about liking a song by a ten-year old kid (who has quite an usual deep voice on the evidence of this), this is a decent pop song which makes it impossible to disagree with the "baby Rihanna" tag. But come on...she is ten! Sadly, the NSPCC are yet to respond to our email about this silly "young pop star" situation.

Rated 3 out of 5

KYLIE MINOGUE - Better Than Today

Firstly, we would like to clarify and answer the one question on our reader's lips. No, Kylie isn't wearing any hot pants in the video!

Kylie Minogue releases this, her third single from recent album Aphrodite, which is the traditional uninspiring Scissor Sisters-esque romp that we have come to expect from Kylie these days. Having said that, it is a decent enough pop effort that almost makes up for the lack of arse excitement with ticking a lot of boxes that you expect from a good-ish commercial pop tune. It's just not our cup of tea.

The Best Entertainment News and Releases of 2010

2010 marked the end of the first decade of the 21st Century and brought with it some of the great entertainment news and releases.

Amongst the best from the music world was the news early on in the year that Hot Chip were releasing their eagerly awaited 4th album, One Life Stand. With a raft of good album reviews, it cemented their place at the heart of British alternative electro. The year also saw The Libertines reform for a reportedly lucrative performance at the Reading and Leeds festivals alongside Canadian legends Arcade Fire. The Strokes returned to form at The Isle of White festival with Paul McCartney, Indie Tracks grew a little bit bigger and a big push was put together to save the 100 Club.

In terms of album reviews, The Coral's Butterfly House was also a high scorer alongside the likes of Arcade Fire with Suburbs, Vampire Weekend's Contra and Broken Bells. However, it was MGMT's Congratulations that made the year great.

Film news included the planned reboot of the Spider-Man series, bringing a new twist on the storyline and a whole new cast. It was also announced that the long awaited Transformers 3 was going into production and that the title for the film was Dark Side of the Moon. There were also rumours that an Alan Partridge movie was back on the cards, but rumours like this have been circulating for a while.

The big film releases for the year were Kick-Ass, Toy Story 3 and Avatar, which proposed to take movie entertainment to a whole new level by reintroducing 3D popularity to cinema viewing.

Documentary follow up to Wonders of the Solar System, Wonders of the Universe, was the big TV news, as well as the release of the Alan Partidge Fosters Shorts online instead of on the television. 2010 also saw the return of Miranda to the BBC, as well as a short Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and a whole new Dr Who series with Matt Smith taking the lead role of The Doctor.

The big entertainment news in the gaming world in 2010 was the launch of Sony and Microsoft equivalents to the Nintendo Wii controllers. The Xbox Kinect and the PlayStation Move made it possible to play PS3 & Xbox 360 games with motion sensitivity controls. 2010 also saw the release of the groundbreaking Back to the Future computer game, which was released in monthly installments.

At the theatres, there was a raft of great shows that began in 2010, including Frankenstein at the National Theatre, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Bedlam, by Nell Leyshon, made history by becoming the first play written by a women to be performed at The Globe Theatre.

Finally, the art world provided some great additions to entertainment news, including Gabriel Orozco's exciting exhibition at the Tate Modern, Philippe Parreno's work at the Serpentine Gallery and the introduction of stunningly crafted elephants to the streets of London. If that wasn't enough, there was also controversy as the 2009 Wildlife Photographer of the Year winner was disqualified at the beginning of the year.

The World's Most Fabulous Outdoor Theatres

There's nothing quite like enjoying a bit of culture in the great outdoors. Listed here are six fabulous outdoor performance areas where theatre and opera lovers can enjoy some of their favourite shows in style.

1. Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, London, UK

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre is the only permanent professional outdoor theatre in Britain. There are 1240 seats, yet people who've been there say that it is an intimate setting. 2. Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston, Texas

Families can also enjoy picnics on the hillside before or after performances.

3. Shakespeare's Globe, London, UK

The Globe is home to all of the great playwright's performances. Built as a typical Elizabethan theatre, it is absolutely stunning and an experience that should not be missed. Seated tickets have the privilege of being covered. Cheaper (£5) tickets require that audience members stand in the pit in traditional 16th century style.

4. Minack Theatre, Cornwall, UK

"Minack" in Cornish means a rocky place, which is perfect because the Minack theatre is made entirely of stone and is situated right on the sea. It is a very fabulous place to visit or take in a show. The theatre was planned, built and financed by one very ambitious woman, Rowena Cade.

5. Fondazione Arena Di Verona, Verona, Italy

This beautiful collosseum is home to many musical and theatrical performances, including La Traviata, Aida, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Nabucco, La Boheme, Romeo et Juliette, Madame Butterfly, Turandot, Carmen, Il Trovatore, Tosca, and Rigoletto.

6. The Crosby Theatre, Santa Fe Opera, US

The Crosby theatre has won a number of architectural awards for being state-of-the-art. It combines contemporary style with traditional building materials. More than the beauty of the theatre itself, guests can also enjoy breathtaking panoramic views, with the Jemez Mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo to the east.

Theatre and opera in themselves are enchanting, so to combine them with extraordinary views and stunning architecture, these outdoor spaces are able to create an exceptional experience that guests will remember and rave about for the rest of their lives.

Denis Wood: The Power of Maps

The recently released Everything Sings: Maps for a Narrative Atlas considers Boylan Heights, a neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina, in grand detail, mapping everything from radio waves to Halloween pumpkins. Denis Wood, the leader of the collaborative mapping project that resulted inEverything Sings, has for several decades been one of the most exciting and approachable writers about maps, mapmaking and the history of cartography. His Ce N’est Pas Le Monde was probably the first comic book ever given as a paper at the Association of American Geographers annual meeting. This February, fellow radical cartographer Tim Stallmann talked with Denis Wood at his home in Raleigh about the nature of maps and the history of the Boylan Heights mapping project.

This spread shows two pages from <em>Ce N’est Pas Le Monde,</em> a comic produced by Denis Wood and John Krygier to advance their argument that maps can be understood semiotically as collections of propositions of the form "This is there." The answer to the question, on the next page, is obvious—"They're maps!" Image courtesy of Denis Wood.

This spread shows two pages from Ce N’est Pas Le Monde, a comic produced by Denis Wood and John Krygier to advance their argument that maps can be understood semiotically as collections of propositions of the form "This is there." The answer to the question, on the next page, is obvious—"They're maps!" Image courtesy of Denis Wood.

Let’s start with a something that’s been nagging me lately. What is a map, anyway? What would you say a map is?

I usually answer that question by pointing to the nearest obvious map! I don’t define maps. A map points to the world. It points outside of itself to the world, and then it points to something else—the subject of the map, and it says that that subject is linked to that place in the world that it’s pointing to. That linkage carries juridical, economic, and other kinds of authority. The map links things to places, so that [through maps] you become linked to a school, to a tax code, to a set of laws that prohibit this or permit that at different ages, you become linked to a system of conscripting for the army, et cetera.

You could record all this information in tabular form, obviously. Prior to the 15th century, in fact, much of this information was kept that way. It’s kept that way as we move into the 16th and 17th centuries as well, but increasingly it takes map form.

I’ve argued that it takes map form because what we know as the modern state is taking shape, and the modern state has uses to make of the map that it doesn’t have to make of other forms of tabulation. Primarily, that is that the map gets wrapped up in the geo-body of the state.

That’s something you discuss in Rethinking the Power of Maps, the way the fact that the modern nation-state has specific borders makes it particularly suited to being mapped, and how the mapped outlines of states become icons for state power. In addition to the iconic nature of national maps, what is it about the map as a medium that makes it so compelling? Why this shift from tabular data records to maps?

Well, the other side of it is you’ve moved to another medium. You’ve moved to a medium that is coterminous with painting. [Maps are] a flat surface, you move lines around. Painting and drawing, mapmaking, other forms of graphics, printmaking—these constitute a whole slither of technologies that inevitably drift from one onto the other. So painting drips onto mapmaking, and drawing drips onto mapmaking, and mapmaking drips onto painting. . . . Needless to say, all the things that you bring from painting are going to find themselves in some way on a map.

Response of Man to Infection with Vibrio cholerae. I. Clinical, Serologic, and Bacteriologic Responses to a Known Inoculum

Abstract

The spectrum of illness and the immunologic response produced by cholera in volunteers were studied. The strains of Vibrio cholerae used were classical Inaba 569B and classical Ogawa 395. An oral dose of 108 organisms in buffered saline was required to induce the diarrhea of cholera. When given with live organisms, NaHCO3 lowered the infecting dose from 108 to 104 organisms. Clinical manifestations of infection varied from culturally positive formed stools to “rice water” diarrhea. Severe diarrhea did not have an explosive onset but rather progressively increased in volume during a 24-hr period. In 45 % of cases the stool was positive for V. cholerae before the onset of diarrhea. Titers of vibriocidal antibody rose after diarrhea, peaked the second week after challenge, and rapidly fell during the next four weeks.

Virgin Broadband Review: Are Virgin a Good Choice of Broadband Provider?

Virgin Media are one of the biggest providers of home entertainment services in the UK, providing not just broadband services but also a home phone rental service and the UKs only cable television service. This makes them an attractive option, especially for those looking to save money in the long term by buying all three home services from the company, saving on their monthly bills by taking up a bundle package from the provider.

In recent a recent Virgin broadband reviews, speed, quality and speed of activation were highlighted as some of the major plus points of using Virgin Media and that's not surprising considering that Virgin offer some of the fastest broadband available in the UK. In fact, in selected areas Virgin can offer speeds of up to 50 Mbps, around ten times faster than the UK national average.

It can offer these speeds because it uses fibre optic cables rather than the traditional copper phone line services used by ADSL providers. Fibre optic lines are faster and more reliable than copper cable, and most importantly they can offer speeds much closer to those advertised on the actual website, which makes it easier for you to decide what speed you want and actually receive it.

There's always a catch though, and with Virgin the catch is simply that you might not be able to receive the service at all. Unlike copper phone technology that's either installed or able to be installed in 98% of UK homes, only about 50% of the UK population will have access to Virgin's cable service, and the vast majority of those will be people living in towns and cities rather than rural locations, where developing a fibre network is simply too expensive.

Those who do find themselves outside the correct area to receive Virgin's cable services need not right them off as a provider entirely though, as they do also offer DSL broadband like all of the other big providers. Of course, as both the Virgin Media TV service and the phone line service from the company need cable to function, you'll miss out on any bundle deal by just using the DSL technology over the cable.

If you do have a cable in your area, you have a wide range of choices when it comes to how you want to use Virgin Media's services. All of the three services available come in a range of sizes and you can choose which ones are more important for you. For example, you get the cheapest phone line package while getting a medium sized TV package and the large broadband package, which is great for people that want all three services but want to emphasis one over the other.

Overall, Virgin offer one of the best bundle deals available in the country, and while their TV offerings can't quite compete with Sky in terms of pure quantity of content or HD channels, Virgin still offer a solid TV service combined with a very fast and capable broadband experience, especially designed for people who demand the fastest speeds available.

Music News - The Magazines That Shaped the Music Industry

Music news as we know it today developed out of the early magazines that caught onto the growth of the popular music industry early on in the 20th Century. Melody Maker was one of the first, introducing itself in 1926 (around the same time that the first electric guitars and amplifiers began to emerge) and targeting musicians. However, as music became more and more popular the music magazines of the day began to target the general public and the introduction of new, rival magazines hit the shelves.

The 1950s is when the real battle started with Melody Maker going head to head with the new kids in town, the NME, an amalgamation of previous titles Musical Express and Accordion Weekly by new owner and music promoter Maurice Kinn. Previously more interested in jazz, Melody Maker was a late convert to the advent of rock and roll, but as the sixties swung in favour of bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the ground was set for big readership figures for both publications.

The 1960s also saw the coming of more politicised voices to the publication of music news with the launch of the Berkley Barb in 1965 and Rolling Stone in 1967. Criticism of the Vietnamese war, the publication of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the counterculture revolution of the 1960s sat next to The Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison cover stories.

This political edge to music publication didn't reach the British music news until the late 1970s with the dawning of the age of punk. However, the early 70s saw the introduction of a new rival, Sounds, which quickly became one of the three music weekly magazines to generate good levels of readership. It's edge came from its ability to see the credibility of new musical movements like Punk early on.

The 1980s would see a mixed bag of journalism in the music industry, with the hip-hop wars affecting the NME and a more populist standpoint reigning at Melody Maker until its intellectual renaissance in 1986. However, it would be the 90s that would see the story of modern British music journalism come to a head. The rise of Britpop and the introduction & success of monthly magazines Q (1986) and Mojo (1993) left Melody Maker without a clear audience or direction, and so in 2000 is ceased publication, merging with its long time rival NME, while Sounds bit the dust nearly a decade earlier in 1991.

The 2000s were left to NME and despite its ropey start to the decade, it would eventually find its footing again with bands like White Stripes, The Strokes and The Libertines. However, with readership dropping fast to just over a tenth of its hey-day 300,000 circulation, publications like NME have pumped significant investment into their online music news to compensate.

With the arrival of a new decade, it's hard to say that any of the remaining music magazines are doing anything particularly trailblazing, but then neither is the music industry as a whole. With the nation locked into the X-Factor culture, genuinely credible new music often finds it difficult to break out of the underground world that it too often resides. The death of Top of the Pops in 2006 meant that the only music to be played on terrestrial television in the UK during prime time viewing was based around one talent contest or another. With circulation figures so low, maybe it's time for the icons of music news to take back what they have spent decades helping to create.

Music - Voice of the Soul

Shakespeare has well said "If music be the food of soul, then play on". Surely, music puts a balm on all your worries and it sooths and relaxes your mind. And music has been regarded as the voice of the soul too. From generations and centuries, music has given enough entertainment to the mankind. Come to the contemporary times and you would witness a sort of revolution in the music industry. Owing to the popular trends like cinema and Internet, there is an emergence of a lot of genres like pop music, jazz, country, Blues, rock and so on. And the Internet is flooded with a plethora of online music websites that have added a new dimension in the popularity of music.

These online music stores are employing new strategies in order to attract more and more users towards them. This includes affiliating with the various social networking sites and offering competitive prices to the users, thereby baiting them for good. Other methods that these online players employ could be giving away a few albums or songs for free as a start up initiative to increase the traffic and clientèle, in terms of music downloads. It can also offer some great incentives to the early buyers.

There is another way to popularise the online music by giving a referral incentive to anyone who refer his/her acquaintances to a particular website. By such means you can buy music on a discount, else you win some freebies or loyalty points for your next purchase... Then, these websites also trust viral marketing to propagate their music store amidst the netizens. Also there are certain websites that sell DRM free MP3s and thus they can be used on any music player very conveniently.

You might have come across a few websites which would not charge anything for listening music but as soon as you try downloading these tracks, they would start charging money on it. But there are many free and legal music download sites have cropped up too, and they have found their target customers as well. So, you can work out on both the options. Thus, the voice of your soul (music) has become a famous business which is catching up like a wildfire along with the other online businesses and is also minting good money out of it.

What Is a Headshot?

What is a Headshot? How much is it? - A headshot as a 10x8 sized portrait or a mug shot...

A headshot as a 10x8 sized portrait or a mug shot. It includes a person's head and sometimes shoulders, and it focuses on the face. The headshot that includes persons' shoulders is usually called the 'three quarter' headshot.

In the UK 10x8, actors and entertainers often use both types of headshots. Traditionally in the UK, actors use black and white headshots and in the USA they are often done in colour. Therefore here it is very important to let the photographer know which market you are going to use your headshots for.

A headshot is used by the actor or entertainer to apply for casting or audition and is usually presented to a casting director, who then makes a decision whether the candidate is suitable for the role.

The best headshots should present a person as they really are, i.e. their look, style and most importantly age. So, if the person have cut or coloured their hair, then they will need another set of professional headshots. The headshot should also reflect the person's best qualities. Good photographer will capture person's character and therefore increase chances of getting the right job.

Great professional headshot will focus on the person and not on the person's clothing. Therefore it is important to get ready prior to the shoot and take a few different tops in black, white, grey and round and v-neck. V-neck top usually helps to elongate the neck rather than to shorten it like round neck top does. Plain clothing is important because no one would want their headshot to be focused on the writing, logos or a set of palm trees that you have on the t-shirt.

There are several TYPES of headshots:

- Commercial Headshots: smiling and projects warmth and friendliness.

- Theatrical Headshots: serious, focused and actors are NOT smiling.

- Studio Headshots: shot in the photography studio with studio lighting

- Natural Headshots: these are shot outside with natural light

- Black and White: usually shot for the UK entertainment market and used for actors and actresses to apply for the acting roles

- Modelling Headshots: these are usually shot for Modelling portfolios and are used to show model's skin completion for the modelling assignments. These are usually done in colour.

Actors headshots prices do vary. Headshots could cost from £50 to £300. This usually has a lot to do with how professional the photographer is. However, booking the session only relying on the price probably is not the best way to go about your future career. There could be possibilities of either not getting a good quality or simply overpaying for the services that could be obtained elsewhere.

It is important to remember that to get the best results it is worth investing in a professional work rather than do-it-yourself work. DIY headshots most likely will not get you anywhere and it could take a lot longer getting that role you have always wanted.

When choosing your professional actors headshots photographer, first make sure they have a professional portfolio, website and a good list of clients. Every photographer could easily be judged on their work. See if their work is varied with different types of styles or all the same style with the same lighting set up. You are an individual and therefore there has to be an individual approach to you and the types of roles are going after.

Checklist For Your Wedding Band or Singer

Planning on getting married this year? Then you will have already realised just how much work the big day involves and should make yourself a check-list ticking off items as they are completed. The entertainment for you and your guests is particularly important as you want everyone to have a good time, here are just a few pointers to assist you in making your wedding day one that will go smoothly without any unforeseen hitches.

Booking a professional wedding band or wedding singer is quite simple to arrange as they should have a long list of songs and tunes they can play, if there's something particular you want then don't be afraid to ask as they will be only too happy to play whatever you wish - after all, it is all about you!

Some venues will have restrictions as to the type of entertainment they are allowed to have on the premises as they require certain licenses, etc. so ensure you inform them of your plans as you don't want any problems on the day. A dancing floor, space and the level of sound allowed could prevent things from going as planned, experienced bands will have experience and know the right questions to ask, so don't worry too much.

Arrange the schedule so the act has enough time before and after they play for setting up any equipment they require as the last thing you want is them carrying out a sound check whilst your guests are sitting down to eat or your best man is trying to give his speech! If you have booked a reputable band or singer and an established venue they should take over all the planning and liaise between them so you needn't concern yourself too much with the details.

Always get written confirmation of the total cost of the act you are booking and check what is included in the price so you don't get an unexpected bill at the end of the day, the quote should take into account any travel expenses and waiting around time, and the PA system and other relevant equipment.

Take the time to sit down with the singer and compile your wedding music list so it includes your favourites, after all only you know what your guests will like - the music act doesn't know anything about your tastes. An established singer will have thousands of tracks to choose from so you can tailor it to fit in with your tastes and make requests. It's traditional for the band to play the newly-weds first dance so co-ordinate with them as to what this will be so they have time beforehand to practise.

Live bands are ideal for wedding days as they offer entertainment for people of all ages to enjoy, or they can provide the background scene by creating an enjoyable atmosphere where the guests can relax and get to know each other and chat. Live bands should be relatively well-known, even if only locally, as reliable and good performers, check out their website or face book link for examples of song lists and listen to music and view videos to give you an idea of their musical style. Whether you like pop, rock, swing, disco, rap, soul, or love songs you are sure to come up with a few options that will keep you and your guests happy.

Search for wedding entertainment Cheshire, or other locations around the UK online where it's easy and convenient to book. There are plenty of experienced singers who can play the latest hits or golden-oldies depending on your preference. It's best to have a varied selection in your music list as your guests themselves will have a diverse range of tastes and ages will vary greatly.

History of HMV Hammersmith Apollo

HMV Hammersmith Apollo is a major live entertainment venue in Hammersmith West London and is one of the UK's largest and best-preserved original theatres which attracts thousands of visitors' every year. The venue dates back to 1932 when it first opened on 28th March. At that time is was named Gaumont Palace cinema and seated 3,500 people. It was designed in the Art Deco style by architect Robert Cromie. It wasn't until 1962 that it was renamed Hammersmith Odeon with the HMV bit added in 2009.

The theatre has a large 35 foot deep stage, and is an excellent fan shaped auditorium which offers remarkable intimacy and excellent sightlines from all parts of the theatre. It houses twenty dressing rooms, a Compton4Manual/15 Ranks theatre organ and a restaurant located on the balcony area.

Over the years all of the top musical stars have performed there. In 1964 and early 1965 the Beatles played 38 shows over 21 nights. Other musicians that performed at the venue in the sixties are The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Tony Bennett and Louis Armstrong. The 70's saw Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie perform and Kiss made their first UK appearance as the venue in 1976. The 80's saw Blondie play one of her most famous shows. Most of the top musicians at the time played there including Culture Club, Tears for Fears, Marillion, Elton John, Public Enemy, Depeche Mode and Duran Duran to name just a few.

It is not just musicians that play there, by the 90's the venue played host to a number of stage productions including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat which was a runaway success. American magicians and comedians Penn and Teller performed live there in 2010 as did Billy Connolly.

The venue has changed hands many times over the years and went through many name changes. Back in 2006 the owners of the venue were encouraged by Hammersmith & Fulham Council and the Cinema Theatre Association to reinstate the original Compton organ. The organ had been in storage since the 1990's but was sorely missed, so having it reinstated gives the theatre back its authenticity.

The most recent changes to the venue was when it was bought by MAMA Group which is a UK based entertainment company who own a number of other venues across the country. In 2009 MAMA group entered into a joint venue with HMV which is where is gets is name today of HMV Hammersmith Apollo.
