Movies That Travel Through Time on Satellite TV

People have always been fascinated with the notion of time travel. In fact, a recent survey revealed that it is one of the most-desired powers in the minds of many Americans, along with the ability to read minds. While modern scientists focus on the present and the future, artistic endeavors such as books and movies often contain fantastical plot lines that take characters to earlier eras. The following are five time traveler films worth checking out on satellite TV.

'Back to the Future' (1985). This science fiction picture, laced with comedy, set a high standard in the industry. Michael J. Fox plays the starring role as Marty McFly, who unintentionally travels back to the time his parents were his age. He gets involved by stopping a bullying sports star from hurting his mom. This interferes in the relationship between his would-be parents, and Marty's future becomes threatened. Because it combines action, comedy, and a whimsical storyline, this film has garnered great acclaim and it continues to be among the top classics from the decade.

'Field of Dreams' (1989). Just four years later, this was another highly successful fantasy film, although it contained elements of the sports genre. Nominated for multiple Academy Awards, this movie stars Kevin Costner as Ray, an Iowan farmer who is inspired to build a baseball field right in the middle of his corn fields. His wife supports him, but financial pressures make them re-consider. Ray then travels back in time and meets a cast of characters as he comes to understand the bigger picture.

'Groundhog Day' (1993). This is yet another movie to check out on satellite TV that has gone down in film history. Unlike the first two, however, it has a different spin. Comedian Bull Murray stars as an egocentric weatherman names Phil Connors. But instead of going back decades, Connors becomes stuck in the same day, reliving it over and over again. The repetition makes him reflect on the decisions he has made and the way he treats other people. Five years ago, it was even added to the list of movies deemed 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.'

'13 Going on 30' (2004). This romantic comedy offers laughs and a plot line that encourages viewers to value what they have in the present. Jennifer Garner stars as Jenna Rink, a thirteen-year-old whose birthday wish is to be thirty, in order to escape her unpopularity. The next morning, she wakes up as a successful professional living on Fifth Avenue, but without any recollection of the seventeen years that have gone by.

'The Time Traveler's Wife' (2009). If you are looking for an interesting take on time as it affects relationships, check out this film on satellite TV. Based on a book, the fantasy film includes Eric Bana as Henry, and Rachel McAdams as Clare, his love interest. Henry has a strange disorder that sends him hurtling through time without control. While there are some benefits, such as advance knowledge of winning lottery numbers, he discovers that there are drawbacks as well when they try to start a family.
