There is certainly a marked difference from the modern comedies to those of classic Hollywood. In general, you could point to the irreverence, the vulgarity and the will to go wherever the writer and director's minds might take them. Political correctness is definitely not in play these days. From Harold and Kumar getting shipped off to Guantanamo to Billy Bob Thornton in a Santa costume, the sky (or maybe the gutter) is the limit. Here are the best 5 modern comedies playing on satellite TV.
1. Pineapple Express. What are Seth Rogen and James Franco doing out in the wilderness, sleeping in a car? After they've realized a drug dealer/murderer is out to kill them, they hide out with a great deal of marijuana and not much common sense. By the time they realize where they are and what they are doing, they may be better off for it. Rosie Perez has a great part in this movie as well, which runs the typical gamut of goofy to downright absurd. Check it out on HBO in high definition.
2. The Hangover. Everything is set for the big bachelor party in Vegas, except the bride's brother is coming along. This character - played by Zach Galifianakis - is more than just a little weird. Something ends up in the drinks of everyone and later on the night reveals itself in the most bizarre string of events. The bottom line is the groom is nowhere to be found. Watching Zach, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms trying to fight their way out of it classic. Check out this comedy whenever you want with satellite TV On Demand service.
3. Nacho Libre. If you think Jack Black is funny in normal movies, imagine him as a monk moonlighting in tights as a Mexican wrestler. Big bonus: Black actually speaks with a Mexican accent throughout the film. Little Chancho believes in him, but not many others, as Nacho (Black) tries to take down Ramses, a local wrestling stud who never takes off his mask. This film is one of the funniest you will ever see.
4. Vampire's Kiss. Though it was merely a blip on the radar back in the late 1980's, this film in many ways paved the way for the dark, absurd comedies that came later. Nic Cage stars as a callow literary agent whose taste for the nightlife leads him to the bite of a vampire (Jennifer Beals). Come to think of it, Cage does Lugosi's walk rather well as his life spirals out of control. See this picture in HD on IFC.
5. Bad Santa. If you are in that Christmas spirit, this movie will likely take you out of it. Billy Bob Thornton plays the lewdest, drunkest and most amoral Santa ever seen on screen. If that weren't enough, his sidekick Tony Cox is the brains of their criminal operation, fronting as the elf to Thornton's Santa. Watching this film on satellite TV is one of the best ways you could spend a couple of hours your next holiday season.
