Nottingham Companies That Are Doing Well

Nottingham has always been a place where businesses thrived. Companies Originating In Nottingham

Pharmaceutical company Boots the Chemists, which now has become Alliance Boots, is one of the most important companies originating in Nottingham. Ever since its founding in 1849 by Jesse Boot, the 1st Baron Trent at that time, the company has been gradually expanding. Jesse Boot's son, John, is particularly known for having greatly enlarged the business. Today the company no longer focuses on conducting pharmaceutical research, but many of its former specialists have teamed up with the many Nottingham University spin-off companies, establishing the city as one of Europe Centre's for biotechnology and pharmaceutical research. Nottingham's BioCity, a state-of-the-art bioscience centre located is the direct result of this collaboration. Recently, science-oriented companies have mushroomed in the BioCity.

Raleigh Cycles, who was born in Nottingham, once had a bicycle factory in the city. In fact, bicycle manufacturing has been for a long time a major industry in Nottingham. This industry, however, has crumbled, culminating with the demolition of Cycles's old factory 8 years ago.

Esendex, an established business SMS firm that operates on a global level, has also been founded in Nottingham, as was Mason Cash, a ceramics maker well-known throughout the UK. Also, fashion designer Paul Smith was born in Nottingham and had his first shop here.

Because of its excellent location, prestigious university, and low corporate tax, Nottingham has always attracted major companies from around the world. Most of these established headquarters in the city or in the area surrounding it. Nottingham owes to this influx of companies a large part of its development over the last couple of years.

Major companies to be found currently in Nottingham include energy giant E.ON, tobacco manufacturer John Player & Sons, engineering pioneer Siemens, gambling systems manufacturer Bell Fruit Games, video-games maker and publisher Games Workshop, and software developer Reuters. All these companies are well-established and thriving in international markets.
