1958 and the world was rocking to the sounds of Elvis Presley, cue the start of worldwide shoe brand Hush Puppies!
The brand was famous for revolutionising trendy casual footwear, launching into the footwear market when US tannery, Wolverine developed a suede oxford shoe made from a local American leather.
The name was invented when one of the workers at the factory said that his buddies dogs were shut up when they were given corn-balls which at the time were called Hush Puppies. At that same time aching feet were commonly known as 'Barking Dogs' - Their idea was that these dogs could be hushed by chucking them some Hush Puppies and it was right!, the connection was started and it stuck!.
The brand came over to the England one year later and was developed by Saxone-Shoes and they became a total success. Hush Puppies were both comfortable and stylish and were the favourites of the fashionistas through the 50s - In fact in the UK they became the shoes of choice for 'Faces' - Mods right through the 1960s. By 1965, the shoes totally dominated the casual footwear market in the America.
The Company developed as the trade for loafers and lace-up shoes came around again - there was a massive market in the mid 1990's as fashionistas sought out second-hand hush puppy styles which was the first time that 'vintage' shoes became fashion. The super cool look gathered apace on the UK cat walks appearing in the '1995 range of John Bartlett, He launched them into a small selection of colors ranging from lime-green to lavender all made in super soft suede upper material. The fashion-world went bananas and all of a sudden hush Puppies were hot property all over again.
In the UK - Top Fashion designer Paul Smith was a huge champion of the Hush Puppies Shoes brand and was the first UK company to stock the new rainbow of colours. They were then picked up by the fashion cognoscenti which saw David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Noel Gallagher picking up on the look.
Since then the brand been brought back to the main stable of Wolverine brands including Sebago, Cat and Merrell. They now makes top-quality mid-market fashion for both Men and Women. They celebrated the 50th anniversary in 2008 and their breadth and range of shoes, boots and sandals makes them the most comfortable, durable and accessible shoe brands on the market, ensuring that this iconic brand will be here for another 50 years!
