Living Your Passion - Interview With International Milliner - Nena Kalu Ogba

With Social Networking, it is easier and quicker to met so many new people. One of the new people that I met is Nena Kalu Ogba. She is an International Milliner based in Lagos, Nigeria with a genuine spirit. A Milliner is a person who designs, trims and sells hats. Her hats are one of a kind and you cannot help but be noticed if you are wearing one of her designs. She has been featured in several magazines such as Royal Ascot and Vogue. She is currently featured in the Vogue October Edition. Apart from her designs, I admire her friendly spirit and her ability to convene kindness through her social network. When and Why did you become a Hat Designer?

Nena Kalu Ogba - I decided to become a milliner out of curiosity. Even after graduating from fashion school, I still found hats a puzzle. I could hardly see any stitches or joins and it just made me wonder how they were made so I started to look for a teacher. The teacher I found happened to be well known - she was the official Royal milliner to the Late Queen Mother of England. I didn't learn millinery with the intention to make hats for others. I just wanted to be able to make some crazy ideas I had in my head come to reality so I could wear some stunning creations to events. But when I returned to Nigeria, a family friend was getting married and my dad asked me to make a hat and accompany him to the wedding since my mum was on holiday in the UK. I made a simple, striking hat, which I wore to the wedding and noticed people walking up to me and asking where I got my hat. Each time I gladly mentioned that I made it myself, they were amazed and asked me for my number.

That's how my hat business was born and spread mostly by word of mouth before I had my first major exhibition and the media fell in love with my designs.

Where did you study fashion and design?

Nena Kalu Ogba - I studied fashion at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. I specialized in contour fashion, which incorporates evening and bridal wear, lingerie design, children's wear, sportswear, swimwear. I later took short courses privately and also at Central Saint Martins College, London learning how to make handbags.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Nena Kalu Ogba - I get inspired by anything really - lines, shapes, nature, animals, birds, flowers, sometimes it could even be a plate design or tea cup design.

How have you been able to be successful in this industry?

Nena Kalu Ogba - By creating unique and original products, strongly believing in myself and in God, determination to get to the top no matter what and constantly marketing myself through different media outlets.

Nike 80s Retro Trainers

Nike is a sportswear and equipment supplier from the United States and was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Philip Knight, a track and field athlete, and his coach Bill Bowerman. Nike takes its name from the Greek goddess of victory. Based near Beaverton, Oregon Nike currently employs over 30,000 people worldwide and is the world's leading supplier of athletic shoes and associated apparel with revenue of approx $19.2 billion US dollars.They market their own products under their brand name as well as Nike Golf, Nike +, Air Jordan to name a few. They also sponsor many high profile sporting figures within the industry and produce a wide range of sports equipment.

Some of their first products to be introduced where track running shoes, which included the Nike Elite trainer, Nike Challenger trainer and the Nike Cortez trainer. These particular styles of trainers were and are still very popular with select groups of people such as 80s casuals, fashionistas and retro trainer lovers.

The company's first self-designed product was based on Bill Bowerman's waffle design. Whilst the University of Oregon resurfaced their track, Bowerman started experimenting with different potential outsoles that would out grip the new urethane track more effectively. His efforts were rewarded when one Sunday morning he poured liquid urethane into his wife's waffle iron. Bowerman from here then went onto develop and refine the waffle sole, which would later evolve into the legendary waffle trainer of 1974.

Hair Extensions & Clip in Hair Extensions Application Methods and Advice

I am writing to share my views with the world on my experience of different hair extensions techniques & why clip on extensions are the best in my opinion.

I am from the UK and have extremely fine hair and since perming and dying it from a young age I ended up with a very fine head of damaged and lifeless looking locks which never grew. I needed to do something as I worked as a professional model for London's u.k leading glamour and fashion agency. The most popular method seemed to be the strand by strand bonded extension which is very popular in the UK and the USA I decided to get mine done at a top UK London salon. The extension application took 5 hours and the cost was £900 and although that was very pricey It was well worth it because they looked amazing. I was booked for many more photo shoots than normal after that and I could not imagine ever going back to having fine straggly split ends. I kept the extension in for the 3 month period as advised and went back to the same salon for them to be removed. This is where it all went wrong. The removal took 2 hours and after it was severely damaged and thinner than before. I was so upset but all I could do is wait and try to use as many good leave in treatments and vitamins I could to try and get it back into some kind of condition.

Around 9 months later I was out with a friend in the USA and realised her locks had all of a sudden grown about 18 inches longer so then realised she had also had a full head of extensions done. I started to warn her about the damage that may be done on the removal. She then told me not to worry as she was wearing a set of clip in hair extensions

So my advice to people wanting to have the bonded hair extension method is to read reviews and do as much research as possible to make sure you are going to the right salon otherwise you may find yourself in the same predicament as I was in.
